Multi-time champion combat robot in the Beetleweight class
Stats
- Weight: 4.5 lbs (Beetleweight class)
- Weapon: 8″ asymmetrical, 11oz, AR600 steel disk, 10k RPM
- Weapon Transmission: Custom 3515 hubmotor, direct drive clamp clutch
- Power: 6s1p, 1050 mah lithium polymer battery
- Drive: “shuffle” drive emulating 2.25″ wheel diameter, carbide cleats
- Materials: steel, titanium, aluminum, garolite, TPU
Originally designed in 2014 solely to dish out big hits (survival not guaranteed), improvements to its reliability allowed it outlast its opponents to victory. With nearly 90 fights and a 82% win rate at NHRL, it is considered one of the best in the world!
In its modern form SS is a, non-modular, non-wheeled, undercutter robot. While the class’s nominal weight is 3lbs, SS is allowed a weight bonus per the ruleset due to its novel shuffler drive (which has caused discord in the community due to its simplicity of design and effectiveness). This added weight went into durability making the robot a tank in its weight division. It is primarily 3d printed TPU with select machined components where precision and motion are required. Carbon rods integrated within the chassis parts add additional rigidity where the relationship of parts across longer spans is required. At the helm, a hardened steel nose absorbs the worst attacks its opponents can muster.
SS v9 debut in late 2024 featuring a direct drive weapon made from a 3515-sized stator and newly designed microshufflers, and 22.2v system voltage for increased power.
The robot is named after Rachel Carson’s book “Silent Spring” in which she writes about the popularity of pesticides, its negative effect on ecosystems, and what it means for the future. It is an appropriate name for a machine who will dominate and eradicate its fellow “insect” weight class robots!

*Note: this post is a backlog and spans the events in 2024 prior to finals* NHRL instituted a rule change for the 2024 season, decreasing the weight bonus for non-traditional locomotion (NTL) robots from 2 lbs to 1.5 lbs (total 4.5 lbs) in the 3lb nominal weight class. This included the shuffler modules I built…

2024 had some big shoes to fill after the path laid in 2023. That resulted in an ambitious year of which only some of the work paid off as planned in the end. Since there was no BattleBots activities, all the effort went into small bots; they all had full rebuilds and new parts which…

Literally in the lobby of the Hilton after the event, I registered for April 2024. I registered three robots, some part fueled by disappointment in Silent X’s early departure and another part fueled by uncertainty for NHRL’s new lottery system. Much to my surprise, all three were accepted. Now I had quite a challenge ahead;…

4am I departed for the early morning drive to Norwalk, CT for the National Havoc Robot League (NHRL) March event. This event I was traveling relatively light; only myself and one beetleweight (3lb) robot, Silent X (SX). You can read about the changes to SX in my previous blog post! I got a pit spot…

This weekend, I’ll be taking Silent X to NHRL for their March event. You might be wondering, why just Silent X? Well, the registration system was overhauled for the 2024 season which transformed it from a first-come, first-serve system to a lottery system. While my main intention was the use up the Saiko! spares, only…
