Saiko! is a departure from pushing technological boundaries to building something simple but well-executed. There isn’t anything particularly remarkable about Saiko! other than its size; it is so small and dense, it’s footprint is on par with many beetleweights (3lbs).
Saiko! brings it all in tight with its machined chassis made from interlocking 7075-T6 aluminum plates. The modified 28mm planetary gearboxes are integral to the frame rails as well, mounting the output carrier bearings and including pilot features to keep everything concentric. Custom wheels molded over sprocket-integrated hubs remove the need for fasteners. A formed AR500 armor belt with welded mounting ears composes 1/4th of the robot’s overall weight and mounts to the frame using custom shock isolators. Multiple armor sets are available depending on the style of its opponent.
“Saiko” or “saikou” means “awesome” or “awesome thing” in Japanese. The Japanese pronunciation was chosen for the homophone with “psycho” with the idea that this bot would either be awesome or crazy but never boring.

Saiko! would be the 12lb robot of the “Dream Team” alongside Lynx (3lbs) and Emulsifier aka ‘Mulsie (30lbs). Truly a team of dreams for NHRL fans but a nightmare for…

Immediately following the April NHRL event (with the exception of moving apartments), I went to work on Saiko! AGAIN; I would be bringing Saiko! to NHRL Teams on June 1st, a special mid-year event where competitors would register in teams of three robots, one from each weight class. But more on that later! While Saiko!…

Friday evening Aaron and I drove down toe Norwalk, CT to meet teammate Liz for the NHRL competition held on April 20th. Much to my own surprise, I had three entries for this event: Silent X, Saiko!, and MegatRON. I was working on them up until the week of the competition and you can read…

Literally in the lobby of the Hilton after the event, I registered for April 2024. I registered three robots, some part fueled by disappointment in Silent X’s early departure and another part fueled by uncertainty for NHRL’s new lottery system. Much to my surprise, all three were accepted. Now I had quite a challenge ahead;…
